LAPD Officers Pursue Shooting Suspects, Confrontation Results in Shooting

"LAPD Officers Pursue Shooting Suspects, Confrontation Results in Shooting"

Los Angeles: On October 10, 2002, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Newton Area uniformed officers Joseph Oseguera, 29 years of age, seven years with the Department and Luis Juardo, 30 years of age, also seven years with the Department, were traveling in their black and white patrol vehicle in the area of Hooper Avenue and 48th Street.

The officers observed three male Hispanics traveling in a 1984 Oldsmobile. The officers observed Carlos Alejo, 26 years old, seated in the front passenger seat of the Oldsmobile, fire multiple rounds at an unknown male Black pedestrian through the open passenger window. Alejo then pointed his handgun at the officers. In fear for their lives, both officers fired multiple rounds at Alejo. The Oldsmobile accelerated and a brief pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, Alejo threw a loaded .357 Caliber revolver out of the window, which was recovered by responding officers. The suspects stopped the vehicle in the area of 54th Street and Holms Avenue and fled on foot. Subsequently, Alejo and one other suspect, Hector Ortega, 24 years of age, were taken into custody. The third suspect, described only as a male Hispanic, eluded a K-9 search, and remains outstanding.

Both Alejo and Ortega were booked for Attempt Murder and are being held on $1,000,000.00 and $500,000.00 bail respectively.

No suspects or officers were injured during the incident. The original victim of the shooting fled the location and remains unidentified.

The investigation is currently being investigated by detectives from the Critical Incident Investigation Division.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Jason Lee, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
