DNA links Suspect to Sexual Assault Case

Los Angeles: On Thursday, September 4, 2003, Robbery-Homicide Division, Rape Special Section, assumed investigative responsibilities for a series of sexual assault related crimes in the Westchester Area. There were six crimes associated with this series that began on August 14, 2003. Four of these crimes were hot prowl sexual assaults, one of which occurred in the City of Inglewood, one was an attempt burglary and one was a prowling.

The prowling incident occurred on September 30, 2003, at 5:00 a.m. In this incident a male black was seen looking into a bathroom window in the 8800 block of Ramsgate Avenue. The suspect fled in a blue SAAB before officers arrived. On October 10, 2003, at 4:00 a.m., Pacific Area officers observed a male black driving a blue SAAB leaving the area of Ramsgate Avenue. The officers were in the area looking for the Westchester Rapist. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was identified as 38 year-old Jerome Green.

Robbery-Homicide Division, Rape Special Section detectives were also working in the area. The detectives heard radio transmissions between the Pacific Area officers who had detained Green and responded to their location. Green’s employer was contacted and he verified Green’s information. Green voluntary submitted to oral swabbing and was released.

On October 23, 2003, Scientific Investigation Division contacted detectives in the morning and advised that Green’s DNA has been linked to one of the crime scenes. A surveillance was immediately setup at Green’s residence. Green was seen leaving his residence and was taken into custody without incident.

On October 27, 2003, the case was presented to Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey, who filed 11 felony counts. Bail was set at $11,000,000.
