Growing up in the Elysian Park Community of Los Angeles it was my dream to either pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers or patrol with the Los Angeles Police Department. Like many Angelinos my first visit to Dodger Stadium sold me on the Dodger team. My first encounter with the Los Angeles Police Department came during a visit an officer made to Logan Elementary School in 1969. I don’t know who this officer was, but he set me on my career path.

Like so many, we look back upon our childhood and hopefully find comfort in the good memories. The son of migrant farm workers, I was fortunate to have parents who gave me good guidance and instilled solid family values. Over the years, these traits have served me well with my own family. After attending Belmont High School, I married my high school sweetheart, Leticia who gave me three great children. Two of our sons are recent graduates of the Los Angeles Police Academy and are currently in Patrol Operations, our daughter is a dedicated college student, and great spender of her dad’s money.

During my 28 years with the Department, I have had the good fortunate of working many different assignments. These assignments include Patrol Operations at each rank, and administrative and training assignments. Without a doubt, my best memories are of my assignments to Operations-Central Bureau Crash, Newton Patrol Division, and 1984 Summer Olympics. The camaraderie, friendships, and work ethic of my fellow officers, supervisors and managers were of the highest quality. We accomplish quite a bit serving our communities, while having fun doing it. Many of my fellow officers and supervisors played an important role in my career development. I am proud to have worked with some of the best police officers in the world. To those of you who are interested in a career in Law Enforcement I highly recommend the profession. You can make a difference in your community.

Ruben De La Torre has attended East Los Angeles College and California State University at Los Angeles, majoring in English Literature. He has also attended the Sherman Block Leadership Institute, West Point Leadership Program, and the 231th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. Besides spending time with his lovely wife, and family, Ruben enjoys gardening, exercising, travelling, and spending time with his grandson.
