Captain Sutton was born in Burbank, California, in 1957. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley and received his B.A. degree in English in 1979 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Captain Sutton was appointed to the Department in August 1980. He was promoted to sergeant in September 1990, to lieutenant in February 1998, and captain in December 2000. As an officer, his assignments have included North Hollywood Area, Jail Division, Newton Area (patrol and vice), Planning and Research Division, and Metropolitan Division. As a sergeant, his assignments were in West Los Angeles Area, Southwest Area, Internal Affairs Division, and Operations-South Bureau. After promoting to lieutenant, he was assigned to Harbor Area and later served as the adjutant to the Chief of Staff. Upon his promotion to Captain, he was assigned to West Valley Operations Support Division. In January 2002, he was assigned to Continuing Education Division, where he oversaw the approximately 100 sworn and civilian personnel responsible for coordinating the many in-service schools and training programs offered by the Department. On October 31, 2004, Captain Sutton became the Commanding Officer of South Traffic Division. Captain Sutton is currently assigned to Pacific-LAX Area.
In 1998, Captain Sutton received his Master of Public Administration Degree from the University of La Verne. As a member of the Department's Career Development Peer Network and Mentor Program, he routinely encourages other employees to continue working toward their professional and educational goals. Additionally, he is a member of the San Gabriel Valley Peace Officers Association, the Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. |
