Child protection is the responsibility of everyone because children cannot look out for themselves. It is our responsibility as parents, peace officers, teachers, good neighbors, etc., to be cognizant of their safety and well being.
Every home and school should have or establish a program that effectively teaches children about safety protection measures. As a parent, take an active interest in your children and listen to them. Establish communication wherein your child can discuss anything that may be bothering them. Also teach your children that they can be assertive in order to protect themselves against abduction and exploitation.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has developed a publication titled, Guidelines for Programs to Reduce Child Victimization. This is an excellent resource for communities when choosing a program to teach personal safety to children. Pacific Area Senior Lead Officers are available to assist with continued education for personal safety for children via school, church and Neighborhood Watch meetings. Contact the Senior Lead Officer over your area, at 310-202-4515, for additional information and meeting dates.
One of the most important things you can do, as a parent, is to make your home a place of trust and support that fulfills your child's needs. In doing so, your child most likely will not seek love, support and understanding from someone else.
Sincerely,
Joseph M. Hiltner, Captain Commanding Officer Pacific Community Police Station
