Captains Message

Your home is considered a sanctuary where you feel safe.  Your home is the only environment where you have control over who can get close to you or your family.  Protecting your home from criminal activity is one of your highest priorities.

By far, the most common threat to your home is burglary.  According to the FBI, a burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 15.4 seconds.  Burglary is a non –confrontational property crime that occurs when you are not home.  The crime of burglary often leaves a family feeling vulnerable and unsafe at home.  To avoid becoming a victim of burglary, it is important to first gain an understanding of who commits these crimes and why.

The majority of home and apartment burglaries occur during the daytime when most people are at work or school.  Burglaries are committed most often by young men under the age of 25 years often looking for items that are small, expensive, and that can be easily be converted to cash.  Favorite items are cash, jewelry, guns, watches; laptop computer, VCR’s, video games, CD’s, and any other small electronic devices are high on the list.  Statistics tell us 70% of burglars use some amount of force to enter a dwelling, but their preference is to gain access via an open window or door.

Although home burglaries may seem random in occurrence, they actually involve a selection process.  A burglar’s selection process is fairly simple, find an unoccupied home with the easiest access, the greatest amount of cover, and with the best escape route.  To help combat burglary suspects harden the target by using: use sturdy solid core doors on your home, lock all upstairs and downstairs sliding-glass patio doors.  Use locks or pigs on all windows especially when you are not home.  Install ample lighting around your property burglary suspects detest being seen committing their crimes.  Join your local “Neighborhood Watch” group it is still the best tool we can against crime.  You may also want to consider an alarm for your property.

Pacific Area has shown a significant decrease in residential burglaries this year (2008) from last year (2007) by 14.6%.  The current decrease is a direct response from the excellent working relationship Pacific Area shares with you the community.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Hiltner, Captain
Commanding Officer
Pacific Community Police Station
