California has long been a hot-bed for grand theft autos. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) the western United States fills the top ten list of cities with the highest vehicle-theft rates, and cities in California hold five of those ten spots. Los Angeles has continued to decrease in vehicle thefts for the third straight year based on rate per capita (per 100,000) but still posted over 79,700 auto thefts in 2007.
Pacific Community Police Station through hard work and educating the community has posted a 16% decrease in grand theft auto from the same time frame from last year. In fact, we have shown a decrease in vehicle thefts for the second consecutive year in a row. Although we have decreased our numbers greatly, we still have work to do. The NICB and Pacific Station suggest that you use a “layered approach” to protect your vehicle.
The first layer is a common sense approach, which includes removing your keys from your vehicle, locking your doors at all times, and parking in well-lit areas.
The second is a visible or audible theft-prevention device, such as steering wheel locks, vehicle alarms and VIN etching.
The third is a device that immobilizes the vehicle and prevents “hot wiring,” such as smart keys or kill switches.
The forth is a tracking devise that allows police to find your vehicle quickly after it has been stolen.
In an effort to further reduce incidents of auto thefts, it is imperative that each of us does what we can to harden the target to reduce the potential for auto theft. The more proactive we are, the greater the chances of reducing these numbers even further.
Sincerely,
Joseph M. Hiltner, Captain
Commanding Officer
Pacific Community Police Station

During this rating period Aggravated Assaults has become a problem in our area. During this period the majority of incidents that took place the victim knew the suspect. Family, friends, and people do not always agree. When people get angry they have three choices; they can avoid each other but the problem usually does not go away, fight but this only makes the problem worse, or solve the problem. Listen to each other and try to work things out. This way, both sides can win. It is human nature to disagree but how you handle the problem that counts. Join your local Neighborhood Watch it is still one of the best tools we have to combat crime. Report any suspicious activity to the police as soon as possible.
Safety Tip
Neighbors safety tips:
Crime can shatter a neighborhood. It can create a climate of fear and mistrust. People may withdraw into their homes. Residents may lose contact with each other. As isolation increases, so does crime. Work with law enforcement. Get your neighbors involved, often you are the first to spot problems or crime. Form a Neighborhood Watch. Watch groups unite neighbors against crime and become the eyes and ears of the police. Neighborhood Watch groups are still the best tool against crime.

I know we tend to leave windows and doors open to beat the heat but it is an open invitation for burglary suspects to enter your home. Never leave your home with any windows or doors open up or down stairs. Install ample lighting, this helps deter burglary suspects. Keep shrubs and hedges trimmed. This will give burglary suspects fewer places to hide as they commit their crime. Keep windows and doors free of trees, flowers or fencing so your neighbors and police can observe your property. Join your local Neighborhood Watch Program it is still the best tool we have to combat crime.
Safety Tip
Lighting safety tips:
Locate outdoor lights carefully. Areas that benefit most from outdoor lighting are those that are most vulnerable: garage doors, entryways, and ground-level windows. Install floodlights high enough so that an intruder cannot unscrew them. Motion sensors, photoelectric lights and low-voltage lighting are the most popular lighting devices used to help deter burglary suspects.
