On December 09, 2017, a fatal traffic collision occurred at the intersection of Hoover Street and Venice Boulevard in the Rampart Area. A pedestrian was struck while crossing Hoover Street in the crosswalk. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and render aid to the pedestrian, as required by law. The pedestrian eventually succumbed to his injuries.

During 2016 the Los Angeles Police Department investigated 260 fatal traffic collisions and 1153 severe injury traffic collisions. Of those collisions, 63 fatalities and 206 severe injuries occurred in Operations Central Bureau. In 2017 alone, Central Traffic Division officers have already investigated 40 fatalities and 212 severe injury traffic collisions. Nearly half the people killed on our streets are those who were walking or bicycling, and an alarming number of them are children and older adults. In fact, traffic collisions are a leading cause of death for children in Los Angeles.

Vision Zero Los Angeles is our city's commitment to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2025. As directed by Mayor Garcetti, this citywide effort brings together transportation engineers, police officers, advocates, and policymakers to work together towards creating safer streets. Our focus will be protecting our most vulnerable road users, including children, older adults, and people walking and bicycling.

Vision Zero initiatives have a proven track record in major cities and countries throughout the world. It is time for our Los Angeles vision: zero traffic deaths on our streets by the year 2025.

Additionally: Drivers caught driving impaired through the checkpoint can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.
