Collaboration Results in Successful Closed Chapter of Rampart Investigation

"Collaboration Results in Successful Closed Chapter of Rampart Investigation"

Los Angeles: In the aftermath of former Los Angeles Police Officer Rafael Perez's plea agreement to federal civil rights violations, a complex and challenging period of the Los Angeles Police Department's history has been brought to a just and reassuring conclusion.

Through the effort and teamwork of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles Police Department, the Department is pleased that this difficult chapter of our history has been finalized. The strength of the relationship between these three investigative entities was validated by the professional and constant forward progress made in the investigation.

As an organization with immovable and strong core values, the Los Angeles Police Department remained diligent in exposing the facts of the investigation-no matter how painful the process of revealing the truth.

Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard C. Parks commends the investigating officers for their untiring efforts in bringing this difficult issue to a responsive, complete, and above all, justifiable conclusion. The fact that this was such a high profile incident magnified our need to correctly and swiftly respond. This was accomplished in a manner that would assure the public that our system of investigation and justice was honest and forthcoming.

As we progress forward, and carefully analyze our reaction and the ramifications to the very core of our values and principles, we are confident that our organization was able to identify and quickly respond to assure our leadership role in the law enforcement community.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Jack Richter, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
