March 27, 2018

Los Angeles: Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart Division are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect, or suspects, responsible for killing 66-year-old Carlos Martinez.

On March 22, 2016, around 9:30 p.m., Martinez had come home from work and was looking for parking near his residence located near the intersection of 2nd Street and Loma Drive. A suspect approached Martinez, as he was seated in his vehicle, struck him over the head with a blunt object and fled with his property. Several citizens found Martinez’ vehicle, stopped in the middle of the street at 2nd Street and Loma Drive, with the engine still running. Martinez was inside the vehicle, unconscious and bleeding from the head.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported Martinez to a local hospital where he was treated for a fractured skull and cerebral bleeding. On August 26, 2016, Carlos Martinez succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead.

During his hospitalization, Martinez described the suspect(s) as male Hispanics, around 17 to 18 years of age. During the assault, he also recalled hearing a female’s voice.

Detectives have considered the weapon used to kill Martinez may have been his own baton, as he was returning home from his job as a security guard.
