Scientific Investigation Division (SID) is composed of the Criminalistics Laboratory and the Technical Laboratory. The Criminalistics Laboratory is a part of the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center at the Los Angeles Regional Crime Laboratory. The 180,000 square foot forensic science facility is located on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles and shared jointly by the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California State University, Los Angeles, the California Forensic Science Institute, and the California Criminalistics Institute.
The Criminalistics Laboratory is comprised of the Field Investigation, Firearm Analysis, Narcotics Analysis, Quality Assurance, Questioned Documents, Serology/DNA, Toxicology and Trace Analysis Units. The Electronics, Latent Print, Photography and Polygraph Units make up the Technical Laboratory which is located in the C. Erwin Piper Technical Center. In the broadest sense, SID’s function is the collection, comparison and interpretation of all types of physical evidence found at crime scenes or collected from suspects and victims, and to provide expert testimony in these areas.
