Deputy Chief David Doan, a native of the Los Angeles area, was born and raised in Venice, California. He joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1974. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from National University.
As a patrol officer and detective, Deputy Chief Doan worked a variety of patrol and detective assignments including narcotics. As a Sergeant he work as a patrol sergeant, assistant watch commander, and a variety of staff assignments. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1986, and worked as watch commander in West Valley Area and a detective lieutenant in Northeast Area. As a senior lieutenant, he was assigned to Planning and Research Division. In October 1992, he promoted to the rank of Captain and commanded Devonshire Patrol Division, North Hollywood Patrol Division, Detective Headquarters Division, Planning and Research Division and Pacific Area. After promoting to Commander in August of 1997, he has worked as the Department’s Employee Relations Administrator, Assistant Commanding Officer of Operations Central Bureau, Commanding Officer of Specialized Services Group, Assistant to the Director of Operations, the Department’s Risk Manager and led the development of the Department’s Risk Management Tracking System, TEAMS II. In March of 2010 Chief Beck promoted Deputy Chief Doan to his present rank of Deputy Chief of Police. Deputy Chief Doan is currently the Chief of Detectives, where he oversees the specialized Detective Commands within Detective Bureau and provides functional oversight on all of the Department’s Detective Operations.
