Suspect Takes His Life After Killing Spouse

Wednesday, September 15, 1999

Rampart Homicide Detectives are investigating the murder-suicide that occurred at 1400 block of Carroll Avenue on September 14, 1999, at approximately 11:20 a.m.

The victim was identified as Maria Delourdes Cabral, a female Hispanic 46 years of age. The suspect was identified as her estranged husband, Jaime Carrillo Cabral, a male Hispanic 43 years of age.

The investigation revealed the couple had a history of domestic violence dating back several years. During that period, the victim filed no formal complaints against the suspect. The suspect moved out of the residence approximately three months ago. Since that time the suspect has been seen in the neighborhood. On some occasions the suspect has been seen hiding in the crawl space below the victim's residence.

On September 14, 1999, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the suspect was seen driving around the victim's residence. At approximately 11:20 a.m., witnesses observed the suspect exit the crawl space beneath the residence and confront the victim on the front porch. The suspect and the victim were standing close together when two shots were heard. The suspect was then seen placing a gun in his mouth and fire one additional shot. Both the victim and the suspect fell out of view of the witnesses.

Paramedics were summoned. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was transported by rescue ambulance to L.A.C.G.H. were he pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The murder weapon, a 32 caliber semi-automatic handgun, was located on the suspect's lap. Also located at the scene were three expanded 32-caliber casing. Evidence was also recovered in the crawl space below the residence corroborating the witnesses' statements.

Two adult daughters and a teen-age son survive the couple. All the children lived with the victim.
