Police Apprehends Suspects Involved in Armored Truck Robbery

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Monday, September 13, 1999

On Friday, September 3, 1999, at 10:55 a.m., an Armored Transport truck containing U.S. currency was robbed by two masked suspects at Sherman Way and Orion Avenue. After the suspects had taken control of the driver and messenger, the driver was forced to drive the truck to a nearby alley where the suspects removed the money and fled in a stolen van.

A follow-up to the scene by Robbery-Homicide Division (RHD) detectives uncovered discrepancies in the detail of the robbery as reported by the driver of the armor truck. The initial investigation revealed that the driver, David Campbell, had violated safety guards and procedures of Armored Transport. A subsequent polygraph of the messenger and driver of the armored truck revealed that the driver was deceptive.

On Tuesday, September 7, 1999, RHD detectives received information from Lancaster Sheriff's that a suspect they had arrested was in possession of a large amount of currency which was bound with bank currency wrappers. Detectives went to Lancaster Sheriff's Station to interview the suspect. During the interview, the suspect admitted his role in the armored car robbery and provided information leading to the identities of the other suspects.

On September 8 and 10, 1999, RHD detectives served search warrants on four of the suspects' residence. As the result of the investigation six suspects have been taken into custody and booked for 211 P.C., Robbery With a Gun. Evidence was recovered that connect the suspects to the crime.

The arrestees are:

David Campbell, 36 years
Christopher Baca, 30 years
Luis Perez, 30 years
Jose Fernandez, 24 years
Raul Briceno, 24 years
Christopher O'Connor, 24 years

NOTE: David Campbell, an employee for Armored Transport, was one of the drivers of the armored car the Department used in the North Hollywood shooting to rescue officers and citizens.
