Commander David J. Kalish Promoted to Deputy Chief

"Commander David J. Kalish Promoted to Deputy Chief"

Los Angeles: Today, Los Angeles Chief of Police announced the promotion of Commander David J. Kalish to the position of Deputy Chief effective September 24, 2000. During his 25 year career, Deputy Chief Kalish's assignments have included patrol, detective, juvenile functions, criminal intelligence, which included anti-terrorist, organized crime and vice operations, planning and research, communications technology, as well as many other specialized enforcement, investigative and administrative assignments. During the past three years, Deputy Chief Kalish was assigned as the Commanding Officer of Community Affairs Group, where he served as the well-known spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department. In his new assignment as the Commanding Officer of Operations-West Bureau, Deputy Chief Kalish will be responsible for overseeing all departmental operations in Hollywood, Wilshire, Pacific and West Los Angeles Areas; a territory of 125 square miles where nearly one million people reside. He will report directly to the Chief of Police and provide leadership to 2,000 employees.

In commenting on Kalish's promotion, Chief Parks stated, "David Kalish has demonstrated true brilliance in his performance throughout his career. He was specifically selected for the critical position because of his intellect, wisdom, experience, and his high level of integrity. He is a dynamic, high impact leader who has earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence and absolute credibility, both inside the LAPD as well as in all parts of the community. I am very proud to announce his promotion to Deputy Chief."

Deputy Chief Kalish, a native Angeleno, earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from California State University at Northridge and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. He also completed studies at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, graduating from the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. In addition to many professional organizations, Deputy Chief Kalish is a member of several non-profit Boards of Directors and personally is involved with numerous philanthropic activities that promote human welfare. He lectures world-wide on a variety of topics including community policing, public safety disaster response, police accountability, media relations, and the role of police in emerging demographics.
