LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Tuesday, September 26, 2000

"Shooting Death; Apparent Gang Related"

Westlake: Rampart Homicide Detectives are investigating the shooting death of a male Hispanic, 29 years of age.

On Sunday, September 24, 2000, at approximately 2:10 a.m., Rampart patrol officers responded to a radio call "Ambulance Shooting in the 100 block of South Westmoreland Avenue." Upon their arrival, at the location, the officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The responding paramedics transported the victim to the Los Angeles County / U.S.C. Medical Center, where the victim later died.

The investigation revealed the victim was shot in the street in the 100 block of South Westmoreland Avenue. The suspects fled in a dark vehicle north on Westmoreland Avenue to 1st Street.

The motive for this shooting appears to be gang related as the location where the shooting occurred is a known gang hangout. The suspects and weapon are outstanding. The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to call the Rampart Homicide Unit at 213-207-2051.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Lyle Michelson, Media Relations Section 213-485-3586.
