Aunt Takes 8-Year-Old Niece's Life

Los Angeles: LAPD Detectives are investigating the shooting death of an 8-year-old female Hispanic who was shot while she slept in her bed by her 52-year-old aunt.

On Monday, September 19, 2005 at about 2:30 a.m., officers responded to an apartment located in the 900 block of Bonnie Brae Street.

When officers entered the apartment they found an 8-year-old child in the hallway suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso and a 52-year-old woman on her bed with a gunshot wound.

According to the investigation, the 8-year-old child lived at the location with her mother, a teenage brother and her aunt.  The aunt and the child's mother were involved in an argument earlier regarding family matters. As the child slept the suspect shot her and then shot herself.  Both died at the scene.

The names of the child and the suspect are being withheld pending the notification of family members.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Rampart Homicide Detectives at 213-207-2000.  On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at the Detective Information Desk at 1-877-LAWFULL (1-877-529-3855).
