Deadly Game of Basketball

Los Angeles:  Hollywood homicide detectives are investigating the murder of a man who was shot while taking a break after playing basketball at a Hollywood park.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at about 9:30 p.m., Andy Abarca, a 23-year-old resident of Los Angeles, and his friends, were at Lemon Grove Park, located at Lemon Grove Avenue and Hobart Boulevard, playing basketball.  When they took a break and sat in the bleachers, two male Hispanic gang members approached the victims and fired several rounds, striking three of the men.

The victims were transported to a local hospital, where Andy Abarca died as a result of his injuries.  Two other victims were treated and their conditions are not considered critical.

One suspect is described as a male Hispanic between the age of 19 to 25, with a thin build.  The other suspect is described as a male Hispanic about 30 years old, with a heavy build.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hollywood Homicide Detectives Estupinian or Small at 213-972-2910.  On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at 1-877-LAWFULL (1-877-529-3855).
