South Los Angeles Man Shot and Killed in Girlfriend's Car

Los Angeles: A man in a car that had stopped for a traffic signal was shot early Sunday morning. He died a short time later.

On September 3, 2006, around 3:05 a.m., Bernard Flowers, 25, a male Black, was riding in the front passenger seat of a car as it approached the intersection of Western Avenue and 76th Street. His girlfriend was driving and an acquaintance was seated in the rear passenger seat. As their vehicle stopped at the traffic light, a white Mercury van with tinted windows pulled along side. Without provocation, an occupant in the van fired multiple rounds from a semi-automatic handgun. Flowers was struck in the upper torso multiple times; his girlfriend was hit once in the upper torso. The rear passenger was not harmed.

A Los Angeles Rescue Ambulance transported Mr. Flowers and his girlfriend to a local hospital. Nearly two hours after the shooting, Mr. Flowers died.

The motive for this shooting is unknown. It appears to be gang related.

The suspect(s) and weapon remain outstanding.
