Deputy Chief Patrick M. Gannon was born and raised in Los Angeles and is a third generation Los Angeles Police Officer following after his father who retired in 1973 as a Policeman and his grandfather who retired in 1952 as a Detective-Sergeant. Deputy Chief Gannon’s eldest son, Michael is also a Los Angeles Police Officer, assigned to Hollywood Division.
Deputy Chief Gannon began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department as a Police Student Worker in 1976 and entered the Police Academy in 1978. His assignments as a police officer included Newton Area, Jail Division and 77th Street Area. He was promoted to detective in 1985 and was assigned to the Abused Child Unit and Internal Affairs Division. He was promoted to sergeant in 1989. In addition to his duties as a field supervisor at Wilshire Area and 77th Street Area, Deputy Chief Gannon also was assigned as a Vice Supervisor in 77th Street Area and as an Assistant Watch Commander in Harbor Area. Promoted to lieutenant in 1997 he returned to 77th Street Area. As a lieutenant he was also assigned as the Officer-In-Charge of the Internal Affairs Rampart Corruption Task Force.
In July 2000, Deputy Chief Gannon was promoted to Captain and assigned to Southeast Area where he was responsible for leading 100 sworn and civilian personnel who were actively involved in criminal investigations and crime prevention in one of the the most violent sections of the City. In 2002, Deputy Chief Gannon returned to Internal Affairs Group as the Chief Investigator and was responsible for overseeing all personnel complaint investigations in Operations-Central and South Bureaus. In 2003, he was promoted to Captain III and assigned as the commanding officer in Harbor Area where he was responsible providing comprehensive police services to 250,000 residents the communities of Wilmington, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway and San Pedro. In October 2005, Deputy Chief Gannon was transferred to 77th Street Area, the busiest operational command in the City, where he served as the Area Commanding Officer.
Deputy Chief Gannon currently serves as Deputy Chief for Operations-South Bureau.
Deputy Chief Gannon graduated from California State University Dominguez Hills in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration and from the University of Southern California in 1989 with a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He has also successfully completed the Senior Management Institute for Police in Boston, the West Point Leadership Program and the Supervisory Leadership Institute.
