"Walk-Up Shooting Murder Appears to be Gang-Related"

Los Angeles – On Friday, July 28, 2000, at approximately 12:20 a.m., a group of friends (approximately twenty to twenty-five people) were congregating outside what is believed to be a known gang location near the corner of Sanford Avenue and Young Street in the San Pedro area. Two males (no further description available) approached the group on foot and began shooting unknown caliber handguns and fled the location.

Alejandro Chavez, a male Hispanic, 21 years old from the San Pedro area, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and torso. Mr. Chavez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics.

Witnesses to the shooting have been uncooperative and have refused to provide information to investigators. Harbor Area Homicide Detectives are handling the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident can call Harbor Area Homicide Detectives at 310-548-7621.
