Alleged Gang Member Shoots Man, Points Gun at Police

Los Angeles: A suspected female gang member was arrested after she shot a man and pointed a gun at police yesterday evening in South Los Angeles.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., gang officers John Flores and his partner Guillermo Espinoza were on routine patrol when they observed a shooting in progress in the area of 43rd and Hoover Street.

The officers saw a female identified as 21-year-old Jackie Haggens, blatantly shoot a man who stood on the sidewalk. As the officers walked toward the scene to investigate, Haggens ran and hid under a nearby-parked vehicle. When the officers looked under the car, Haggens pointed a gun at them, and an officer involved shooting occurred.

Neither one of the officers nor Haggens were injured.

Haggens immediately dropped her weapon and surrendered to police.

Investigators say Haggens had a male accomplice with her at the time of the shooting that fled the scene. Officers searched the surrounding area extensively but were unable to locate him.

The victim of the shooting was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and is listed in stable condition.

Investigators recovered a Smith and Wesson .9mm semi automatic handgun from underneath the vehicle Haggens hid under.

Flores and Espinoza have been with the Department for 10 years and 8 months, 4 years and 9 months respectively.

Detectives believe that robbery was the motive for the shooting.

LAPD’s Force Investigation Unit (FID) will investigate the officer involved shooting incident.

Southwest Division detectives will handle the attempt murder and a series of armed robberies connected to Haggens and her accomplice.
