Armed Suspect Shot and Killed NR09392gb

August 12, 2009

Los Angeles: Los Angeles resident Eugene Douglas, age 31, a suspect known to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers as a parolee and gang member, was shot and killed during a short foot pursuit two days ago.

On August 9, 2009, at around 5:30 p.m., LAPD 77th Street Area, Gang Enforcement Police Officer II Gabriel Holguin, five years and four months with the Department, and his partner were driving in the area of the 900 block of 68th Street. Noticing Douglas standing in the immediate area where they were driving, the officers stopped their car, and Officer Holguin exited the vehicle to make contact with him. As he approached the suspect, he called out his name, but Douglas ran from the officers, leading them on a short foot pursuit. Officer Holguin also saw Douglas holding his waist as he ran, and Douglas eventually stumbled as he drew a gun from his waistband. He then turned toward the officer with his gun, and an officer involved shooting occurred.

Los Angeles City Fire Department personnel responded and treated Douglas for multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his fully loaded handgun was recovered at the location. No officers were injured during the incident.

The LAPD Force Investigation Division responded and is investigating the officer involved shooting.
