LAPD Captain Phillip Tingirides, Commanding Officer, Southeast Area
LAPD Community Relations Office, Southeast Area PAL
Jordan High School Varsity Football Team
Keith Johnson President, Long Beach Junior Crew

WHY:
On Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 through Thursday, September 1, 2011, the Los Angeles Police Department, Southeast Area, PAL (Police Activities League) have partnered up with the Long Beach Junior Crew at the Peter Archer Rowing Center.

The Peter Archer Rowing Center was home to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Long Beach Junior Crew has agreed to coaching 12 young adults from the Jordan High School Varsity football team for a 3 day rowing camp. These young adults reside in and around the area of Jordan Downs Housing Development, an area typically plagued by gang violence, narcotics and much negativity.

The LAPD Southeast Area PAL is continuously working with the youth of the community to expand their minds and creativity, giving them opportunities they would not have normally had to experience. This bonding with the youth also helps continue to build the bridge between the people in the community.

When introducing these young adults to this program, many had never heard about Rowing and only had made reference to a scene in a recent film “the social network”.  Rowing is one of the fastest growing NCAA sports; it offers training and conditioning for strength, endurance, coordination and mental fitness.  Rowing involves a great sense of teamwork, pride in accomplishment and dedication to a purpose.  It is our hope to maybe find 1 or 2 or maybe more during this camp who would like to seriously consider rowing as a sport to assist in their academic endeavors and well as continue to build on the relationship between the community and the LAPD.

For additional information please contact Sergeant James Linder or Detective Wheeler at Southeast Community Relations office, 213-972-7962.
