Captain Don Schwartzer was born in New York where he began his law enforcement career before joining the Department in 1980. He is currently the Commanding Officer of South Traffic Division.
Captain Schwartzer has held a variety of positions during his career with the Los Angeles Police Department. His patrol assignments were at West Los Angeles, Pacific, 77th Street, Southwest, Central and Southeast. As a sergeant, he was an assistant platoon leader and a K9 supervisor at Metropolitan Division. He has worked investigative assignments at 77th Street and South Bureau Homicide. His administrative assignments include: patrol adjutant, 77th Street Area; Staff Researcher, Evaluation and Administrative Section, Office of Operations; Aide to the Commanding Officer, Uniformed Services Group; administrative lieutenant, Southeast Area and lieutenant, OIC at Use of Force Review Division.
Captain Schwartzer was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1989, to the rank of lieutenant in 2001, and to the rank of captain in 2007 with his first command at Southwest Patrol Division. Captain Schwartzer has attended the Supervisory Leadership Institute and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy as well as Command Development. Captain Schwartzer is completing classes for a Bachelor of Science Degree at Cal State, Long Beach. Additionally, Captain Schwartzer is the Department coordinator for activities surrounding National Police Week. Captain Schwartzer enjoys running and snow skiing. He resides in the South Bay with his wife Maurene and their two young children.
