Motor Officer of the Year for 2008
Police Officer II+2 Milan Ayers, Serial No. 33373, and Police Officer II+2 Arthur Lee Simms, Serial No. 31462, have been selected as “Co-Motor Officers of the Year 2008.” It is an honor for the men and women of South Traffic Division to recognize Officer Ayers and Officer Simms as the Co-Motor Officers of the Year for 2008. The two officers were selected for this prestigious award because of their demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and willingness to go beyond the call of duty to assist the citizens in the community that they serve. The two officers have been commended numerous times for showing outstanding dedication, hard work, ethics, and sincere compassion for Department personnel and as well as members of the community.
Officer Ayers has displayed strong leadership qualities and has set an excellent example for his fellow motor officers. He has been assigned to South Traffic Division’s COMPSTAT Team because of his tenacity, work effort and diligence toward traffic enforcement and traffic education. He has paid attention to the traffic problem areas and the high risk streets and intersections as identified in the Traffic COMPSTAT Report. His efforts have served the needs of the community to enhance a safer environment for community members to drive, for pedestrians to walk, and for children to play. His proactive traffic enforcement productivity has been instrumental for South Traffic Division to achieve a 16% increase in traffic citations year to date 2008 compared to 2007, which has resulted in a significant 11 % decrease in total traffic collisions, a 11% decrease in serious “A” injury collisions, a 17% decrease in Hit & Run collisions, and an 8% decrease in motor vehicle versus pedestrian collisions within Operations South Bureau.
Officer Ayers attended Birmingham High School in Los Angeles. He was a tri-sport athlete for his high school competing on the baseball team, the football team and the basketball team. In addition, he wrote articles for his high school newspaper. He attended West Los Angeles Community College prior to enlisting with the United States Army. He served 7 years in the Army and he was a member of the prestigious Ist Ranger Battalion.
Officer Ayers joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in January 1996 and was honored as the Guide-on for his academy class. He achieved status as the number 2 ranked recruit in his academy class. He was a member of the LAPD Centurion Baseball Team. His LAPD work assignments included Southwest Patrol Division, Wilshire Patrol Division, Harbor Patrol Division, Central Traffic Division – Traffic Enforcement, and South Traffic Division - Traffic Enforcement.
Officer Ayers lives in Hawthorne with his son Ryan, who attends California State University Dominguez Hills and is a member of the baseball team. Officer Ayers currently attends California State University Long Beach and he has achieved a 4.0 GPA in Criminal Justice. His intention is to attend law school upon his graduation from college. In addition to academic pursuit, his hobbies include participating as an umpire for college baseball games, roller skating and playing chess.
