Officer Involved Shooting at the Sports Arena

On February 11, 2000, Southeast Area uniformed Officer Adrian Chin, was working a special detail on-duty assignment for a concert being held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. At approximately 10:50 p.m., Officer Chin entered the Sports Arena facility and observed a suspect firing a handgun in the direction of a nearby crowd. Officer Chin identified himself, but the suspect continued shooting. In defense of the citizens’ lives, Officer Chin fired his service weapon at the suspect.

The suspect then turned and pointed his handgun at Officer Chin. In fear of his own life, Officer Chin then fired his service weapon again at the suspect. The suspect, who was wounded by the gunfire, was taken into custody without further incident. Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.

Three citizens sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and were transported to local hospitals. Two victims were treated and released and one remains hospitalized in serious condition.

The suspect’s weapon, a loaded Semi-Automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.
