Captain III John A. Sherman was born in Los Angeles and raised in the San Fernando Valley. He attended Cleveland High School and California State University Northridge (CSUN). While attending CSUN, he was a Police Student Worker with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Prior to becoming a sworn officer, he served four years active duty in the United States Marine Corps. Captain Sherman is a second-generation Los Angeles police officer; his father, Glen Sherman, retired as a Lieutenant in 1980.
In 1985, Captain Sherman joined the LAPD. As a police officer, he worked as a patrol officer in the Rampart, Devonshire, and Hollywood Areas. In 1990, he was promoted to Sergeant and worked Central Area, the Office of Operations, and also completed two tours of duty in Wilshire Area as a patrol supervisor. In 1997, he was promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to Rampart Area as a watch commander, and then to Management Services Division. On April 8, 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He has been the Commanding Officer of the Devonshire Operations Support Division, Devonshire Patrol Division, and the Assistant Commanding Officer of Rampart Area. On October 31, 2004, Captain Sherman assumed command of West Valley Area and returned to the community where he was born and raised (Reseda). In November, 2007, Captain Sherman was named the Area Commanding Officer of the 21st Area (Topanga), scheduled to open in January, 2009.
Captain Sherman earned a Bachelor's Degree in Management from the University of Phoenix in 1994. Captain Sherman is married with three children and is very active with his church, soccer, and the community.
