Commander Jerry Szymanski was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in February 1972. During his 35-year career, Commander Szymanski has worked a wide array of assignments including six very distinct commands as a captain. Commander Szymanski returns to Operations-Valley Bureau as the Assistant Commanding Officer after having successfully commanded both Foothill and Devonshire Areas. As an Area Commanding Officer, Commander Szymanski achieved a great deal of success in developing community partnerships and reducing crime. His other commands include Devonshire Detective Division, Burglary-Auto Theft Division, Commercial Crimes Division and most recently Narcotics Division.
As a lieutenant in Pacific Area, Commander Szymanski headed the Oakwood Task Force (OTF), a police/community partnership which received Presidential recognition by former President George H. Bush. Several attributes of the OTF served as the foundation for the Focused Attack Linking Community Organizations and Neighborhood (FALCON) Narcotics Abatement Unit a cooperative agency approach to neighborhood problems. The nuisance abatement strategy became a national model for other police agencies.
In 2003, while the commanding officer of Commercial Crimes Division, Commander Szymanski helped developed the Department’s bait car program designed to impact escalating auto theft in the City. He also served for several years as the coordinator for the yearly Law Enforcement and Private Security conference, a partnership with the private security industry.
Commander Szymanski has a Bachelors of Science in Public Management from Pepperdine University followed by graduate studies at California State University, Los Angeles. In addition he is a graduate from the West Point Leadership Program.
Commander Szymanski is a member of several professional organizations including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, International Cargo Security Council, International Association of Auto Theft Investigators and the Peace Officer's Association of Los Angeles County.
