Mission Area Community Youth Festival NA10247kr

WHAT:
Youth Festival

WHEN:
Sunday, September 12, 2010
10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE:
A Solidarity Walk will begin on Willis Avenue and move to Blythe Street, ultimately arriving at Parthenia Place, and is expected to take about an hour.  On Parthenia Place exhibition booths will be set up between Sepulveda Boulevard and Columbus Avenue.

WHO:
Mission Area Safer Cities Initiative Officers
Councilmember Richard Alarcon Staff, District 7
Panorama Neighborhood Council Members
Redil Christian Congregation

WHY:
This event is a result of a series of Parenting Leadership Education and Accountability (PLEA) workshops that began in January of this year.  The focus of the workshops were to educate parents in recognizing tell-tell signs that their children may be involved with, or venturing into, criminal behavior.  Resources and information was provided to assist parents in assessing their children's propensity to get involved with delinquent behavior, and to provide intervention techniques to deal with the behaviors.

Between 300-500 participants are expected, with a variety of non-profit organizations setting up over 40 exhibition booths to provide a variety of free services to parents and youths alike, with the goal of promoting youth services and crime prevention.

A PLEA workshop will also be held, with guest speakers providing valuable information and insight.  There will be testimonials of police officers who grew up in many of the neighborhoods they now serve, to encourage parents and remind teens that making bad choices now will have long term consequences, even limiting their options later in life.
