Captain William Eaton was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. He was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in August, 1989 after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from California Statue University, Sacramento.

Captain Eaton's first assignments were working patrol in Hollywood Area and Newton Area. During that time he earned a Master's degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Long Beach, completing his studies in December, 1993. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1996 after working as a Senior Lead Officer in Newton Area.

Captain Eaton has worked a variety of assignments throughout his career. He worked in Foothill Area and Hollywood Area as a Patrol Sergeant and as a Vice Supervisor and later worked as an Internal Affairs Investigator. In 2001, Captain Eaton was promoted to Lieutenant in 77th Street Area and then worked as the Officer-in-Charge of the Hollywood Vice Section. In 2003 Captain Eaton was selected to serve as the Adjutant to the Deputy Chief, Commanding Officer of Professional Standards Bureau. In August of 2006 he was promoted to Captain after completing a tour as the Officer-in-Charge of the Ethics Enforcement Section.

Captain Eaton is a member of several professional law enforcement organizations, teaches internal affairs courses throughout the United States, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is married to a Los Angeles Police Detective and has two young sons.
