VAN NUYS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
February 2012 Vol. XIII, No. II
Captain’s Message
I hope all of you are enjoying 2012. As we begin the month of February, I want you to know that we are working very hard to mirror the excellent crime statistics we had last year. Our statistics were exceptional so it will be difficult to continue those statistics or improve upon them, but with your on-going help as the “eyes and ears” for the Police Department we will continue to strive to bring about good statistics in 2012.
I would like to encourage all of you to participate or start a Neighborhood Watch program, and to think about joining our Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) or the Mid-Valley Community Police Council (MVCPC). These two groups are an integral part of Van Nuys Community Police Station’s relationship and outreach with the community. The C-PAB Co-Chair is Penny Meyer, and Jean Sinatra is the MVCPC President. If you would like information about the meetings for the C-PAB or MVCPC, please contact Officer Mike Perez of the Community Relations Office at (818) 374-9406, or Sergeant James Park, Officer in Charge, Community Relations Office at (818) 374-1996.
The Area goals for 2012 have been set. The goals include a 5% reduction in all Part I Crimes, Community Engagement, Leadership Development, Constitutional Policing, and Prevention and Response to Terrorism Incidents. We are looking forward to making positive strives on these goals in the 2012.
We finished out 2011 with a reduction of 11% in Part I Crimes. For 2012, the Department set a goal of reducing Part I crimes another 5%. As of January 28, 2012, Van Nuys Division is currently experiencing a -3.4% reduction in violent crime over last year, with Property Crimes up 2.4%. Overall Part I crimes are up 1.9% over this time last year. The crimes that have increased over last year are Stolen Vehicles and Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles.
Please remember to be vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity you see, because we need your continuing help and support to help keep the community safe. Thank you as always for your support!

Crime Trends/Statistics
Property crime, such as Burglary Theft from Vehicle and Residential Burglary, are still my main focus at this time located in the northern part of the division. Most of the incidents involving these crimes continue to be vehicle related. However, we are still experiencing some minor activity with regard to residential burglaries as well. These burglaries are happening during the daytime hours, so please be mindful and properly secure your homes when away at work. If you should see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please call to report it. Finally, to help combat your chances of being victimized by burglary theft from motor vehicle, please be mindful of not leaving valuables in plain sight. Let us all remember to Lock it, Hide It, Keep It.
Crime Prevention Tips
Let us watch out for one another as a community and be the “eyes and ears” for your Police Department. Please report all suspicious activity in your neighborhood. To combat auto theft crime, try to utilize a theft deterrent device (i.e.; steering wheel locks, alarms, etc.) to help lower your chances of being victimized.

Crime Trends/Statistics
In recent weeks, we have experienced multiple incidents of residential burglaries. A few incidents have occurred during the morning hours as other have occurred in the afternoon. We have had no incidents reported during evening hours. If you become aware of any suspicious activity, please call and report the suspicious activity to 1-877-ASK-LAPD. Please, remember to Lock-It, lock your car doors and windows as well as your doors and windows of your home. Remember to Hide It, hide your valuables from plain sight in your vehicles as well as your home. If we all do these simple steps, we will have a better chance to hold on to our property, and Keep-It.
Crime Prevention Tips
It is always a good precaution to give the appearance that you are home when you are out. Leave a light on during the evening if you are gone. Leave the radio on, so it gives the impression that you are home. Make sure to close your blinds and shades as well as locking your doors. Make sure to take your valuables with you when locking your vehicles. At the very least, cover your valuables with a shirt, coat, or blanket. If you cannot place your valuables in the truck, slide them under a seat and out of view.

Crime Trends /Statistics
We are continuing to see a substantial decrease in prostitution. With this in mind, please continue to report any sightings to our area Vice Unit at (818) 374-0066. We are still making numerous arrests, however we still need your help tracking their different activities and locations. Make sure to update your Trespass Letter of Authorization - they are only good for one year. Also, make sure you have the correct signage for the trespass order. We are also seeing some activity with regard to property crimes. Please remember to always remove any valuables from your vehicles and make sure to lock them properly and activate the alarms. Do a walk- through at night and verify that all of your lights are working or add new sensor lights, to strengthen your house against becoming a possible target.
Crime Prevention Tips
Please report any suspicious activity or person by calling the Los Angeles Police Department at the Non-emergency phone number of (877) ASK LAPD, and for crimes in progress dial “911.”

Crime Trends / Statistics
We are currently experiencing some minor activity with regard to Burglary Theft from Motor Vehicle and residential burglary, for Basic Car 9A63. Please be mindful of this and properly secure your homes when away at work. Also, continue to be mindful of not leaving valuables within plain sight in your vehicle. You must keep your vehicle free of any visible items to reduce your chances of becoming a victim. Remember, “Lock it, Hide it, Keep it”.
We are still experiencing some slight activity of graffiti in the Sherman Oaks area. Most, if not all is tagging and not gang graffiti. Still this is blight to the area and we are working hard to catch these vandals. Please report any graffiti to us so that we may photo it and document it. Also, you may request to have it painted out by calling 311.
Crime Prevention Tips

Crime Trends/Statistics
Residential Burglaries are my main concern at this time, located in the southern portion of Sherman Oaks. Although there has been a slight reduction of these crimes, we are still focused on this activity. The area south of Ventura Boulevard between Kester Avenue and Fulton Avenue seems to be the most active. Most of these incidents are happening during the daytime hours. For those of you who are home during the daytime, please keep an eye out, and report any suspicious activity you might see. This issue will remain to be my focus point at this time. Once again, please report any suspicious activity during the daytime hours on your street, as it might relate to residential burglary.
Crime Prevention Tips
If you are home during the daytime, especially if you live in the hills please occasionally walk outside and take a look around. Please make it look obvious that you are doing this, if anyone is checking out your neighborhood they might go elsewhere. Remember, do not leave anything that appears to be of value visible in your vehicles. Remind all your friends and families not to leave things visible in their vehicles.
