email Deputy Chief Debra McCarthy is the Commanding Officer of Professional Standards Bureau.

Deputy Chief McCarthy moved to the Los Angeles area in 1980 and started a career with Hughes Aircraft Company.  In 1988, she left Hughes and joined the Los Angeles Police Department.  As a police officer, Deputy Chief McCarthy worked Newton and Pacific.  She promoted to Police Officer III (Field Training Officer) in 1990 and Police Officer III+1 (Senior Lead Officer) in 1991, both in Newton.  She promoted to Sergeant in 1993 and worked both West Los Angeles and Harbor Patrol.  In 1996, she promoted to Sergeant II (Assistant Watch Commander) in Harbor Division and in 1998 she promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to Southeast patrol.  She promoted to Lieutenant II in 1999, and was assigned to Rape Special Section of Robbery-Homicide Division.  In 2002, she promoted to Captain I and was assigned to West Los Angeles Operations-Support Division, where she remained until she promoted to Captain II in May 2003.  In April 2005, she was promoted to Captain III and Commanding Officer of Rampart Area.  On May 14, 2006, she was promoted to Commander.  In January 2010, she was promoted to Deputy Chief.

Deputy Chief McCarthy was born in Providence Rhode Island in 1960. She was raised in Jamestown and is the fourth of eight children.  She is also a past Vice President of the Los Angeles Woman Police Officers Association.  Deputy Chief McCarthy is married.  Her husband is a Commander for the Los Angeles Police Department, and he is the Assistant Commanding Officer of Detective Bureau.  The McCarthy's have two daughters.
