Captain Lauer was born and raised in Arlington, Virginia. She attended the Pennsylvania State University, home of the National Champion Nittany Lions, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice.
In 1985, Captain Lauer joined the LAPD. She worked patrol assignments in Southeast, Central, and Wilshire Areas (where she was a Senior Lead Officer), and an administrative assignment at Parker Center before promoting to Sergeant in 1992. As a Sergeant, Nancy was assigned to Southwest, Communications, and Internal Affairs Divisions. During that time, Nancy returned to college and obtained a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the California State University at Long Beach.
In 1997, Nancy was promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to West Los Angeles Area as a Watch Commander. In 1999, she was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Police, as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of Liaison Section, and subsequently to Management Services Division as the OIC of the Special Projects Section. In 2001, Nancy was appointed to the FBI National Academy. In 2002, Nancy promoted to Captain and was the Patrol Commanding Officer at Southeast and Southwest Areas.
In 2006, Captain Lauer assumed command of West Traffic Division. The following year she was appointed to the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) in Boston, Massachusetts. She is currently the Commanding Officer of West Traffic Division.
