Captain Bill Hart was born and raised in Boston and served as a police officer in Massachusetts for five years before joining the Los Angeles Police Department in July 1983.  Upon completion of Academy training, he was assigned to Wilshire Patrol Division, Southwest Patrol Division, South Traffic Division, and 77th Street Patrol Division.  He promoted to detective in 1990 and worked assignments at Southeast Detective Division and South Bureau Homicide.  In 1991, he was promoted to sergeant and was a field supervisor at Harbor, West Los Angeles, and Southeast Patrol Divisions, before returning to Harbor Area as supervisor in the vice unit.  Captain Hart was promoted to lieutenant in 1998 and served as a watch commander in West Los Angeles and Pacific Patrol Divisions.  In 2000, he was assigned to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Airport Detail, where he oversaw a huge expansion of the Department’s resources at LAX following September 11, 2001.  His most recent assignment was as the OIC of Internal Affairs Criminal Investigation Division-South Section.

Captain Hart served as a military police officer in the United States Army National Guard.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Northeastern University in Boston, a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach, and is a graduate of the Department’s West Point Leadership Program.   He is also a member of the Peace Officers’ Association of Los Angeles County and the California Peace Officers’ Association.  Captain Hart is married and has four grown children.
