Captain Robert Long was born and raised in Glendale, CA. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach. Captain Long entered the Los Angeles Police Academy in February of 1990.
Captain Long has worked a patrol officer, field training officer, detective, detective supervisor, field sergeant, gang unit sergeant, patrol watch commander, gang impact team officer-in-charge and the officer-in-charge at Robbery-Homicide Divisions, Robbery Special Section. He was promoted to Captain in July of 2016.
Captain Long is an expert in field of gang related crime, high profile robbery investigations, serial sex crimes investigations and labor trafficking.
He has a background in handling high profile incidents as an investigator, detective supervisor and a commanding officer. He has been the lead investigator or directly supervised the Tear Drop Rapist sexual assault series, Bounty Hunter Blood FBI Task Force, Operation Pirate Town, Operation Red Rein, Nordstrom Rack robbery investigation, and the Western Bandit robbery series. He has an extensive knowledge of Los Angeles Area gangs and their tactics utilized for higher level criminal organization, such as narcotics organizations, robbery/burglary crews and high level prostitution.
Captain Long is married and has two teenage children.
