New Year’s Eve Gunfire Reduction Campaign

December 28, 2000

Los Angeles: As each New Year approaches,
the Los Angeles Police Department launches its citywide
Gunfire Reduction Campaign
. This campaign is designed to help
reduce incidents of indiscriminate gunfire that has become a deadly
New Year’s tradition in our city.

The Gunfire Reduction Campaign aims to advise the community that
ringing in the New Year with gunfire will not be tolerated in the
City of Los Angeles. Discharging a firearm into the air is a felony
punishable by one (1) year in state prison. Anyone arrested for
discharging a firearm will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of
the law.

We hope you join our efforts to make this Holiday Season a safe and
enjoyable one as we launch our newly produced TV and radio Public
Service Announcements (PSA), which will run in conjunction with
billboards, school posters, and newspaper advertisements. Video and
audio tapes of the public service announcements have been
distributed to the media, however additional tapes are available
upon request.

A Department Representative will be available on Wednesday December
27, 2000, through Friday December 31, 2000, to explain and/or
answer questions related to the problem of New Year’s Eve Gunfire.
If your station would like to schedule an interview, please contact
Officer Guillermo Campos at Media Relations Section at
213-485-3586.

On December 29, 2000, at 10:00 a.m., the Gunfire Reduction Campaign
will host a press conference at the Police Academy Gymnasium,
located at 1880 N. Academy Road, Elysian Park.
