Los Angeles: On Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 4:00 p.m., the LAPD Centurions Football Team will honor fallen teammate Police Officer Ricardo Lizarraga, during a football game against the Fire Department from New York.
Joyce Takata, wife of Officer Lizarraga will kick off the event with the commemorative coin toss. At half time, a special memorial presentation of his jersey and helmet will be made to his family. In addition, each of the LAPD Centurions will be wearing #54 on their helmet in honor of their fallen teammate.
Since 1978, the LAPD Centurions have been playing football for kids. This unique fraternity of Los Angeles Police Officers practice, play, and travel on their off duty time to raise money for the Blind Childrens Center of Los Angeles. The center provides research and development of educational programs for families in the Los Angeles area with young children who are blind or severely visually impaired.
For the past five years the LAPD Centurions have won the National Public Safety Football League (NPSFL) West Coast Championship, and in 2001 the team won the National Championship. The Centurions are one of 15 Law Enforcement and Public Safety Football Teams that travel nationwide to play football and raise money for charity. The LAPD Centurions is proud to be a part of this organization that puts so much emphasis on giving back to the community.
