The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed** Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating a Law Enforcement Related Injury (LERI) that occurred in Wilshire area.

On June 12, 2018, around 7:45 a.m., Wilshire Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a burglary radio call at a single-family residence in the 400 block of North Alfred Street. Under the supervision of an on-scene supervisor, the officers entered the residence and initiated contact with the suspect, later identified as Charles Childs.

After efforts to obtain voluntary submission to arrest proved ineffective, a contact team of officers approached Childs, resulting in a LERI that involved physical force and the use of the TASER.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported Childs to a local hospital where he was admitted after the deployment of a TASER.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Force Investigation Division detectives responded to the scene to handle the administrative and criminal investigations.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation for compliance with the LAPD’s policies and procedures.

Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the incident to determine if the force used by the officer(s) violated any criminal laws.
