The Criminalistics Laboratory is comprised of seven specialized units that provide support services to investigative personnel in the Department— the Field Investigation Unit, the Firearm Analysis Unit, the Narcotics Analysis Unit, the Serology/DNA Unit, the Toxicology Unit, the Trace Analysis Unit and the Quality Assurance Unit.  Most Criminalistics Laboratory personnel operate out of the Forensic Science Center.  FSD also has a laboratory at the Piper Technical Center.

The Forensic Science Division (FSD) is accredited as a Forensic Calibration and Testing Laboratory by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) using the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation standard. To maintain its accreditation, the laboratory undergoes a full on-site assessment by a team of assessors every four years, with additional annual assessment activities to evaluate and confirm ongoing conformance. FSD has been continuously accredited since 1998.

FSD is accredited in Forensic Testing in the disciplines of Biology, Fire Debris and Explosives, Firearms and Toolmarks, Impressions, Materials-Trace, Scene Investigation, Toxicology, and Seized Drugs. FSD is accredited in Forensic Calibration for Toxicology.
