South Traffic Division Will Conduct Crosswalk Enforcement in Harbor Area

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Wednesday, April 5, 2000

"South Traffic Division Will Conduct A Crosswalk Enforcement In Harbor Area"

Harbor - On Thursday, April 6, 2000 from 7:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., uniformed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's South Traffic Division will be in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Belle Porte Avenue conducting a "Pedestrian Enforcement" Task Force. Officers will be acting as pedestrians, walking across Pacific Coast Highway, in marked crosswalks.

The focus of the effort will be to enforce existing laws pertaining to pedestrian's right of way. Officers will be enforcing strict traffic enforcement efforts, to remind the driving public of their responsibility toward pedestrian safety. There has been a rise between vehicle and pedestrian traffic collisions. In 1999, they had 57 traffic collisions that resulted in deaths, 20 which were automobile vs. pedestrian.

In the past there has been some concern from the citizens in the community in regards to "entrapment" issues. In an effort to dispel those issues and to better inform the public, members of the Press are invited to join Captain Kenneth Garner and the officers from South Traffic Division, in this weeks task force activity. Captain Garner will be at the location from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.

Any questions in regards to this activity please send inquiries to South Traffic Division, Special Traffic Enforcement Unit, Sergeant Jerry Liggett at 213-485-7336.
