In 2001, Mary Grady was hired for the newly created position of Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Director, assigned to Community Affairs Group, Office of the Chief of Police. Her responsibilities as the Public Information Director included advising Department management on the effects of Department policies and procedures with the public,developing a long-term strategy for partnership with the media, and promoting the Department as a public and community service agency while being able to effectively deal with the media regarding issues of public and community concern. Mary created the Entertainment Trademark Unit within the Department, which protects the Department’s Intellectual Property Rights, works with the City Attorney’s Office to identify possible causes of action against violators, and coordinates entertainment projects, including but not limited to television documentaries and series, movies, Internet, books and magazines. Mary also hosts and manages the production of "Inside the LAPD," a weekly 30-minute show that airs on LA Cityview, Channel 35, the City of Los Angeles’ cable channel.
In December 2002, Mary was named the Commanding Officer, Community Affairs Group. Under the Department’s new Organizational Chart, the office is renamed Public Information Office and has oversight of Media Relations Section, which includes the Entertainment and Trademark Unit and the Public Information Unit; and Public Communications Section, which includes the Public Relations Unit and the LAPDOnline Unit.
Prior to joining the LAPD, Mary established a public relations consulting firm. Her clients included those in the Entertainment, Fashion and Healthcare industry. Mary also worked as a teaching consultant with a National Crisis Media Management company.
Mary is also an award-winning veteran broadcast journalist with nearly 20 years of experience. This includes 13 years in the Los Angeles media market.
Mary’s career began in 1982 as a weekend sports anchor in Roswell, New Mexico at KBIM-TV. After serving as a weekend anchor and reporter at network affiliates in Amarillo, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma, she moved to the largest independent station in the United States, KCAL-TV in Los Angeles. Her tenure includes working for the CBS network owned and operated affiliate in Los Angeles, KCBS-TV, The Business Channel, and UPN News 13. Mary has covered everything from earthquakes, brush fires, floods, and the 1992 Los Angeles riots. She has reported on trials that make national headlines and entertainment news, including the Academy Awards.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized Mary’s work, and honored her with three Emmys. The Radio and Television News Directors Association has awarded Mary with four Golden Mike Awards. She has been named the Associated Press Reporter of the Year, and has been recognized for her work by the Los Angeles Press Club and Women in Radio and Television.
Mary is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Radio and Television and Speech Communication.
