In 2001, Mary Grady was hired for the newly created position of Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Director. Her responsibilities as the Public Information Director included advising
Department management on the effects of Department policies and procedures with the public, developing a long-term strategy for partnership with the media, and promoting the Department as a public and community service agency while being able to effectively deal with the media regarding issues of public and community concern. Mary created the Entertainment Trademark Unit within the Department, which protects the Department's Intellectual Property Rights, works with the City Attorney's Office to identify possible causes of action against violators, and coordinates entertainment projects, including but not limited to television documentaries and series, movies, Internet, books and magazines. Mary also hosts and manages the production of "Inside the LAPD," a weekly 30-minute show that airs on LA Cityview, Channel 35, the City of Los Angeles' cable channel.
In December 2002, Mary was named the Commanding Officer Public Information Office and has oversight of Media Relations Section, (which includes the Entertainment and Trademark Unit) and Public Communications Section, the Public Relations Unit and the LAPDOnline Unit.
Mary is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Police Historical Society, a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Information Officers Association. She is also an original member of the Public Affairs Committee for the Major Cities Chief's organization.
Under Mary's leadership, the LAPD Media Relations Section received the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California, Freedom of Information Award.
Prior to joining the LAPD, Mary established a public relations consulting firm. Her clients included those in the Entertainment, Fashion and Healthcare industry. Mary also worked as a teaching consultant with a National Crisis Media Management company.
Mary is an award-winning veteran broadcast journalist with 20 years of experience. This includes 13 years in the Los Angeles media market.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized Mary's work, and honored her with three Emmys. The Radio and Television News Directors Association has awarded Mary with four Golden Mike Awards. She has been named the Associated Press Reporter of the Year, and has been recognized for her work by the Los Angeles Press Club and Women in Radio and Television.
Mary is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Radio and Television and a minor in Speech Communication.
