State of California Awards CPOA 2001 Award of Distinction to One of LA's Finest

"State of California Awards CPOA 2001 Award of Distinction to
One of LA’s Finest"

Los Angeles - Chief Bernard C. Parks and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is proud to congratulate Police Officer II+2 John Nichols, assigned to Central Traffic Division, on his selection for the California Peace Officers’ Association’s 2001 Award of Distinction. Officer Nichols is a 25-year veteran of the LAPD who, most recently, was the recipient of the "Treasures of Los Angeles Award." Past recipients of this award have included Mayor Richard Riordan, American Novelist Ray Bradbury, and Los Angeles Times Editor Bill Boyarsky. John received this prestigious award in recognition of his altruistic contributions to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.

In 1996, Nichols organized a charitable car show at the LAPD Academy to heighten public awareness regarding bone marrow transplants, and raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Bone Marrow transplant Unit. In preparation for the car show, John on his own time, attended various car shows and invited other agencies to participate in the charitable event. In response, several agencies displayed their respective restored antique police vehicles and racecars. Additionally, the LAPD’s Special weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit, along with Air Support Division personnel, displayed their respective equipment.

To date, the car show car show has raised over $98,000.00 for the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of Children’s Hospital. The event also provided a heightened awareness regarding bone marrow transplants and offered screenings of prospective donors. John’s efforts have not only improved the lives of children, but also the growing number of volunteers who come to share his optimism and dedication. It doesn’t end there. Officer Nichols has donated more than eight gallons of blood to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

To contact Officer John Nichols, or to receive more information, please contact Officer Guillermo Campos at Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
