Drunk Driver Hits Car, Man, House in South Los Angeles

"Drunk Driver Hits Car, Man, House in South Los Angeles"

Los Angeles: Duane Leon Porter, 56 years, was arrested for driving under the influence yesterday, May 25, 2005, after he struck a car, a pedestrian, and a house near 54th Street and Vermont Avenue in South Los Angeles.

The chain of events began at 6:20 PM, when Porter rear-ended a white Toyota Corolla, which was stopped eastbound on 54th Street. After this initial collision, witnesses said Porter drove onto the sidewalk and struck a 31-year-old man. Porter continued driving until he ran his white 2004 Chevy Malibu into a house at 1020 West 54th Street.

Witnesses pulled Porter's keys from the ignition to keep him from driving away. Porter was not injured in the collisions.

Diana Chiu, 37 years, was driving the Toyota. She complained of injuries to her back. The pedestrian, Tiwan Barton, suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to a local hospital. He was later released. The Malibu collided with the front porch of the house, cracking its support beams. No residents were in the house at the time.

Porter was booked for felony driving under the influence. South Traffic Division is investigating the collision. Preliminary information showed that Barton was a passenger from the Toyota, who got out of the car after the initial collision.

Chiu lives in Tujunga. Barton is from Panorama City, and Porter resides in South Los Angeles.

Persons with information about this incident may call Detective Hutchings, South Traffic Division, at 323-290-6063. On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at the Detective Information Desk at 1-877-LAWFULL (1-877-529-3855).

Reported video clips of the collision were not filmed by the police department, and the LAPD has not released any such clips.
