Commander Jose Perez was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in a Catholic, Puerto Rican home with Spanish as the primary language. His career path was established while he was in second grade when he assisted a Chicago Police Officer with an investigation. While at school, his teacher was a victim of a crime. 'Little Jose' translated information between the police and a fellow Spanish speaking classmate who had witnessed the crime. The officer was very impressed with Jose. The officer spoke to him regarding a future career as a police officer. Jose felt a sense of pride, knowing he had helped another. From then on Jose Perez knew he would have a positive and meaningful role in law enforcement.
After graduating St. Gregory High School in Chicago he joined the U.S. Marines. While in the Marines he was stationed in Southern California, where he met his wife, Debbie. Subsequent to completing his tour in the military he returned to Illinois with his wife. He then began his career in law enforcement in a suburban town of Chicago. After seven years of harsh winters, he and his wife made the choice to return to sunny, Southern California. In the fall of 1983 Jose Perez began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Commander Perez was appointed to the Department in November 1983. As a Police Officer and Training Officer he worked various assignments such as patrol in Rampart and Southwest, Southwest Area Vice and Special Problems Unit, West Bureau CRASH and Detectives. He then promoted to the rank of sergeant with five years on the job.
As a Sergeant he was assigned to Hollenbeck Area for eleven years. While in Hollenbeck he worked assignments such as Area Watch Commander, Officer in Charge of Hollenbeck Vice, and SLO Supervisor. He also assisted in the community where he filled in for Santa Claus when Santa was unavailable.
Commander Perez promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2001. After promoting to Lieutenant he was assigned to Rampart Area Patrol, Detectives and the Gang Impact Team. His last assignment, at the rank of Lieutenant, was the very prestigious responsibility as the Adjutant to Deputy Chief Michael Moore at Operation West Bureau. In May 2005 he was promoted to the rank of Captain where he was assigned to Northeast Area as Patrol Commanding Officer. He is currently the Commanding Officer of Rampart Patrol.
Commander Perez lives with his wife and two teenage daughters. He spends much of his time with his family, enjoying horseback riding. He has also just taken up photography in hopes to capture many of the delightful memories he shares with his family. Furthermore, he and his wife have just recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. |
