Man Dies Unexpectedly while in Custody

Los Angeles: A man in police custody died Saturday afternoon while being held at Valley Jail Section.

On Saturday, May 31, 2008, at around 7:50 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles County Police Department brought Robert Hynds to Valley Jail Section after arresting him on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. During the booking process, Hynds complained of chest pains and was transported to a local hospital to be examined. After being cleared to book, he was returned to Valley Jail Section to resume the booking process.

On June 1, 2008, during a routine cell check, Hynds was found by jail personnel to be in medical distress and was again transported back to the hospital. He did not respond to medical treatment and was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m.

Force Investigation Division personnel are conducting the investigation. No reportable use of force was used at the time of arrest or at any time during his detention at the Valley Jail facility.
