Wilshire Community Newsletter
December 2010
Vol. 2 No. 12
Captain’s Message
We are moving towards the end of 2010, the men and women of the Wilshire Community Police Station send our best wishes to you and everyone who works or resides in the Wilshire community. At the beginning of the year and the months after your policing partnership is requested to enhance public and traffic safety throughout Wilshire's business and residential neighborhoods. It is imperative that community members remain aware of neighborhood activities and cognizant of children, especially in neighborhoods where parks and schools are located.
Our 2010 public safety efforts were extremely effective. Together, we produced a 22% reduction in Part I Crime, which leads the City. This includes reductions in Violent and Property Crime of 13% and 24%, respectively.
Currently, Wilshire shows a 22% increase in gang crime, although the difference between 2010”s current total and 2009’s is eight crimes. To address the crime increase, Wilshire’s Gang Enforcement Detail and Narcotics Enforcement Detail will continue their enforcement action on Wilshire’s top gang and narcotic offenders and their deployment on days in which gang crime is statistically the heaviest. Wilshire Area has continued to work with recognized community organizations and Department entities to develop and implement gang crime intervention and prevention strategies.
Wilshire Detective Division has achieved several of their goals, including the overall Part I Clearance Rate goal of 23%. Detectives have also maintained a zero backlog with their investigations since the beginning of 2010. Additionally, most of the individual Detective Tables have met their clearance rate goals, Autos (GTA – 13%, BTFV – 14%), Homicide (100%) and Property Crime (Burglary – 18%, Larceny – 23% and Grand Theft – 36%) have met their individual goals of 10%, 12%, 80%, 15%, 19% and 36%, respectively.
Community members are urged to immediately report suspicious circumstances, objects, and people to the Police Department. Should you observe any possible illegal activity, it is recommended you safely record pertinent information and then report it to the police. In case of an emergency, please telephone "9-1-1." For non-emergency service, please telephone the Department's Communications Center at (877) ASK-LAPD or the Wilshire Community Police Station's Front Desk at 213-473-0476 for any questions/concerns or to make a police report. The City of Los Angeles has also established a "3-1-1" system for all non-emergency City services, including non-emergency police service requests. This system is a valuable resource designed to ease the burden on the "9-1-1" system.
Wilshire continues to use NIXLE to alert the public of emerging crime trends, important community meetings, receive tips to prevent crime and provide feedback when police work leads to an outstanding arrest or investigation. Wilshire finished 2nd in the Department’s NIXLE subscriber initiative with 1,339 new subscribers, which has allowed Wilshire the ability to reach multiple businesses and residents, developing newfound relationships with those that were previously uninvolved with our community policing efforts. For Real Time Crime Information on your phone or email sign up at www.nixle.com. If you are interested in receiving these messages, please log on to ttp://lapdonline.org/e_policing for more information.
Working with the Wilshire Community Police Advisory Board, the Wilshire Station has implemented the e-Policing Program. This program sends e-mail messages to community members regarding public safety issues, especially crime prevention strategies and crime trends. Recent messages have included information about wanted criminals and vehicles in specific neighborhoods. Our goal is to alert community members and enhance the effectiveness of crime prevention, homeland security and public safety strategies. If you are interested in receiving these messages, please log on to http://lapdonline.org/e_policing for more information.
Due to our community policing partnerships and problem solving efforts, a significant number of criminals have been captured while in the progress of committing crimes. However, we must continue to improve the effectiveness of our Business and Neighborhood Watches and work together to make the Wilshire Community safer. If you are interested in becoming involved with our community policing activities, partnerships and programs, or wish to serve as a Wilshire Station volunteer, please telephone Sergeant A.J. Kirby or Officer G. Webber, at 213-473-0200.
The following is a list of meetings that have been scheduled for the month of November 2010:

Crime Update
The Departments goal for 2010 is a 22% reduction in Part 1 crimes compared to 2009. Property crimes remain our biggest challenge, make sure you lock and secure all doors and windows and don't leave valuables in your cars.
Very often, when there are no spikes in crime we tend to let our guards down. Don't let this happen. Please continue to follow the below listed Crime Prevention Tips.

We should all take extra care to be as safe as possible.
•Always be aware of your surroundings.
•Never leave anything inside your vehicle in plain view of the public.

Although crime is down in our area, we still need more neighborhood watch captains and neighborhood watches to be formed. Remember the neighborhood with a strong neighborhood watch is a very safe neighborhood.
We also need citizens from 7A1's area to become members and/or participate in C-PAB, Clergy Council and any other community driven council at Wilshire Division. Your participation will be deeply appreciated. Please feel free to call me to help you start your neighborhood watch group.

This is a find example of people working with people. Prior to traveling listen to your traffic alerts via radio or Internet before you hit the roadway and know alternative route on your daily route to work. Leave plenty of time before so you are not rushing to work. This will reduce stress level as well. Practice leaving early to archive a pattern in leaving early, therefore when you are running late you are actually on time.

Crime Update
The Departments goal for 2010 is a 22% reduction in Part 1 crimes compared to 2009. Burglary from motor vehicles is our number one crime problem in the area. Please continue to keep an eye out for suspicious persons in the area and around vehicles parked on the street. Please report all transient camps or people sleeping or living in their vehicles. Please remember to report all suspicious activity and report crimes to the police. When a criminal is caught in the act, we can tie him to other crimes. If we have no reports on file, there is no way to connect that person to a crime. Robberies are down in our area with only about one robbery occurring a week. Please avoid walking alone and also don't walk while using your cell phone or IPODS. These items are often taken in street robberies and could cause you to become a target.
Crime Prevention Tips
If you have crime problems or quality of life issues in your neighborhood, beside the police department, there are various resources available to you. Report trash and bulky item pick up to (800) 996-CITY. Cleaning up the community is an ongoing process that will impact crime and prevent your neighborhood from becoming a breeding ground for criminals. We need to send a message to criminals that your community cares about maintaining a clean and peaceful environment. When the criminal element sees a clean environment, they will think twice about committing crime in that community. The main reason is the fear of getting caught in the act by a community that cares and will report them to the police.
Lastly, if you are interested in starting a Neighborhood or Business Watch in basic car 7A85 or would like to know about joining the Wilshire Community Police Advisory Board please call me. The Wilshire Community Police Advisory Board is a diverse group of Wilshire residents or business owners who meet monthly with our commanding officer to address police or quality of life problems and receive crime alert information that may be of interest to you. Wilshire is continually looking for interested people to join and work in partnership with the police.
If you have a crime or quality of life problem in your community, please call me on my city cell phone at 213-793-0790. I will assist you in any way possible.
