Brian Heany

Bio

Brian Heany is a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and was sworn into the organization December of 1995. As a Police Officer, he was assigned to divisions at Hollywood, West Valley, Southwest and Operations-West Bureau. He had assignments to address quality of life issues in uniformed and bicycle patrol, foot beats, narcotics & gang enforcement details, and undercover vice investigations with loans to detective sections working on follow-up investigations.

Upon promotion to the rank of Detective, he was transferred to North Hollywood Area where he was assigned to the Crimes Against Persons Section and then later to the Homicide Unit.

In 2003, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he held assignments in Van Nuys, Foothill, Special Operations Division, Gang and Narcotics and the “Elite” Metropolitan Division. He worked as a supervisor in uniform patrol, a gang enforcement detail, LA IMPACT and a MS-13 FBI gang task force, fugitive apprehension squads, narcotic investigations and was a platoon sergeant for both Crime Suppression and Tactical Support Elements while also being assigned as the Assistant Officer in Charge (AOIC) of the Mounted Unit.

During his time with the Department, at the age of 36, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. After attending Recruit Enlisted Basic Indoctrination, he was assigned as a Maritime Enforcement Specialist. He was later selected to be a Special Agent with Coast Guard Investigative Services (CGIS). As a reserve, he was deployed multiple times to active duty and was the recipient of numerous individual and unit commendations.

In 2022, he promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he was assigned to Northeast Area as a Watch Commander. As a Lieutenant II, he was selected for additional assignments as an Officer-in-Charge (OIC) at the Office of Operations, Department Homeless Coordinator Unit and the Public Engagement Section and then at Operations-Central Bureau as the Bureau Gang Coordinator along with assisting in the coordination of the Bureau’s Special Events Unit. Afterwards he was selected to go back to Metropolitan Division as an OIC of the Criminal Impact Team, Metropolitan Operations Section and Mounted Unit. He is currently a member of the Incident Management Team (IMT) to be deployed to large scale incidents within the city.

In 2026, he promoted to Captain and was selected to be the Patrol Commanding Officer of Central Area.

Captain Heany attended Los Angeles Valley College and is a graduate of Union Institute and University where he received a Bachelor of Administration degree in Criminal Justice Management. He also obtained his Graduate Degree from Norwich University, the Military College of Vermont, in Justice Administration. Captain Heany was selected to attend the FBI National Academy (Class 288), Sherman Block Leadership Institute (Class No. 412), Los Angeles Police (West Point) Leadership Program, various other state leadership and supervisory classes along with the POST Management Course. He is also a member of the Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma.

Prior to joining the Department, Brian worked with the Los Angeles City Park Rangers Department and was a reserve deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
