Bio

Captain Jerry Chaney was born in Port Arthur, Texas. After graduating High School, Captain Chaney moved to Los Angeles, California and continued his education at Compton Community College.  Captain Chaney played two years of football at Compton College and received a football scholarship from Purdue University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.  Captain Chaney later earned a Master of Science Degree in Leadership and Management from the University of La Verne.

Captain Chaney began his law enforcement career at Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Department (MTAPD) in May of 1990.  He joined the Los Angeles Police Department as a Sergeant on November 27, 1997, as a bifurcated merger of the MTAPD into the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.  Captain Chaney worked a variety of patrol and investigative assignments including Transit Bus Division, Central Patrol Division, Patrol Adjutant, Area Adjutant, and Training Division, where he was assigned as the Officer in Charge, In-Service Training Unit/Section.

In 2015, Captain Chaney promoted to Lieutenant I and was assigned to North Hollywood Area as a Watch Commander and Assistant Detective Commanding Officer.  In 2019, he was selected for Lieutenant II assignment as an Officer in Charge of the Gang Impact Team at North Hollywood Area, where he remained until his promotion to Captain in April 2022.

Captain Chaney was honored to be promoted the rank of Captain by Chief of Police, Michel R. Moore in 2022 and assigned as the Wilshire Patrol Division Commanding Officer.

Captain Chaney has graduated from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, Post Management School, and Los Angeles Police Leadership School.  He also attained Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Supervisory and Management certificates from the California Officer’s Standards and Training (POST).  Captain Chaney is a member of Oscar Joel Bryant Foundation and National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

Captain Chaney is married, and they have two children and two grandkids.  In his spare time, Captain Chaney enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
