Dominic Choi

Bio

Chief Dominic H. Choi was born in Los Angeles, California, and currently resides in Orange County. He graduated from Canyon High School in 1988 and continued his education at the University of Southern California where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Chief Choi is married and has three children.

Chief Choi began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department on November 27, 1995. He worked a variety of divisions as a police officer, which included Southeast Division, Pacific Division, Rampart Division, and Hollenbeck Division. His assignments included a variety of patrol and specialized assignments. In 2001, he was promoted to Detective at Harbor Division where he worked Crimes Against Persons and Gang Detectives.

In 2002, Chief Choi was promoted to Sergeant at 77th Street Area where he worked as a field supervisor. As a Sergeant II, he worked as an investigator assigned to Internal Affairs Group, Administrative Investigation Section.

In 2009, Chief Choi was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to Southwest Area as a watch commander. As a Lieutenant II, he held the position of Officer-in-Charge at Internal Affairs Group, Workplace Investigation Section, and Adjutant to the Director of Office of Special Operations.

He was promoted to Captain on June 15, 2014 and appointed as the Foothill Division Patrol Commanding Officer.  Chief Choi also worked as the Commanding Officer of the Risk Management Division until December 25, 2016, when he was appointed as the Commanding Officer at Pacific Area.

In December 2017, he was promoted to Commander and assigned to Operations-Central Bureau.  Chief Choi was also appointed as the Department’s Homeless Coordinator and remained in that position until July 2019.

In August 2019, he was promoted to Deputy Chief and assigned to Operations-Central Bureau. In March 2020, he was appointed as the Chief of Staff to Chief of Police, Michel Moore where he was responsible for the flow of information to and from the Chief of Police.

In January 2021, he was appointed as the Director of Office of Support Services overseeing the Administrative Services Bureau, Training Bureau, Behavioral Science Services, and Critical Incident Review Division. In July 2021, he was promoted to Assistant Chief.

In January 2024, Chief Choi was appointed as the Director of the Office of Operations, responsible for South Bureau Homicide Division, LAX Field Services Division, the Department Homeless Coordinator, Operations-Central Bureau, Operations-South Bureau, Operations-West Bureau, and Operations-Valley Bureau, including all 21 geographic areas within those bureaus.  The Office of Operations is responsible for of most the Department’s sworn personnel.
